On September 9, 2024, the Eurasian Patent Convention (EAPC) marks its 30th anniversary. This milestone reflects the significant evolution and achievements of the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO). In an exclusive interview with Dr. Alexey Vakhnin, Partner and Managing Director at Vakhnina & Partners, Dr. Grigory Ivliev, President of the EAPO, discusses the convention's impact, the growth of the EAPO, and future prospects for the organization.

Dr. Ivliev highlights the anniversary as an opportunity to honor the founders and early supporters of the Eurasian patent system, including Dr. Victor Blinnikov and Dr. Arpad Bogsch. The EAPO has grown from its early days into a modern regional patent office with high standards of examination and a competent digital system. This growth underscores the dedication and expertise of the EAPO's diverse team of professionals.

Over the past 30 years, the EAPO has established a robust patent system across its eight member states. The office has expanded its mandate to include the protection of industrial designs and now functions as an International Searching and Preliminary Examining Authority under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). This recognition highlights the EAPO's high-quality examination processes and its commitment to continuous improvement.

The EAPO's Development Programme until 2028 outlines ambitious goals, including the digitalization of services, expanding international cooperation, and introducing new registration systems for trademarks and utility models. These initiatives reflect the EAPO's commitment to adapting to the evolving needs of the IP landscape and supporting innovation across the Eurasian region.
